WHAT IS SCREENDANCE?
What forms does dance take when it is transposed onto a screen? Screendance is a set of art practices situated at the intersection of dance and cinema. In this creative space, dance transforms the approach to the image, and cinema offers new opportunities for thinking about choreography. From analogue to digital technologies, including video and a variety of alternative techniques, screendance has carved out a prominent place in the history of cinema. Whether narrative or documentary, surrealist or abstract, screendance offers multiple aesthetics by combining the potential of dance with that of cinema.

INNOVATION, GREAT NAMES, AND BEAUTIFUL DISCOVERIES
Under the artistic direction of Priscilla Guy, the Regards Hybrides Collection is an unprecedented project that targets the general public, artists, and scholars with its affordable annual subscription. Containing more than 60 Canadian works produced over the last few decades, the vast majority of which are available exclusively on the platform, the Collection offers a unique journey through time and a variety of artistic approaches. 

The Collection allows viewers to revisit key works by great names (Margie Gillis, Marie Chouinard, Louise Lecavalier, José Navas, Terrance Houle, Gilles Groulx, Tedd Robinson, Bernar Hébert, Édouard Lock, Ginette Laurin, Robert Lepage) and to discover daring creations that the general public isn’t (yet) aware of (Sonya Stefan, Manon Labrecque, Kijâtai-Alexandra Veillette-Cheezo, Jontae McCrory, Marites Carino, Pablo Diconca, Vickie Grondin). 

The Collection offers a range of surprising aesthetics in which dance and images meet. From abstraction to narrative and documentary approaches, choreography is presented in a stimulating, inventive, and moving way! Opening the door to screendance practices in Québec and elsewhere in Canada, the Regards Hybrides Collection is a unique resource that will continue to grow over the years as it welcomes new productions, testifying to a diversity and constant renewal of practices. Available on the web without territorial limits, the Collection promises to make Canadian talent known on an international scale.

The Regards Hybrides Collection is based on a high-quality experience that offers a deep dive into the creative world of screendance. To accompany the viewing of works, the Collection offers exclusive complementary content: access the artists’ point of view with our short video interviews or go behind the scenes of creation with our in-depth audio interviews! Our series of unpublished texts also offers personal, analytical, or historical perspectives on certain works.

INNOVATION AND THE HIGHLIGHTING OF A HERITAGE
The Collection takes on the challenge of examining certain issues related to digital development in dance, as well as the often perilous task of archiving choreographic works, at a time when many of the great Canadian names in the dance world are reaching the peak of their careers. The Collection therefore focuses on a mix of works, with a special emphasis on certain key works that are not well known to younger generations, as well as recent works that address the current issues posed by the interaction between dance and new technologies.

DUTY OF MEMORY AND SENSITIVE TRIBUTES
A duty to remember is manifested in the form of tributes to strong figures in the arts who have left, in various ways, a great void around them at the time of their death. This is particularly true of Ken Roy, Angel Gates, and Tedd Robinson, whose on-screen performances provide a vivid reminder of their contributions. The three works that highlight them in the Collection are accompanied by custom-commissioned texts by Katya Montaignac, Wayne Wapeemukwa, and Marie Claire Forté, who have placed their thinking at the intersection of these artists’. It is notably in this spirit of intergenerational and multidisciplinary networking that the Collection stands out from the existing offer.

AN AVANT-GARDE PROJECT ON AN INTERNATIONAL SCALE
A unique platform, the Collection is much more than a simple online catalog: while it promotes discovery, it also acts as a means of wider cultural transmission by nourishing the curiosity and sensitivity of a variety of audiences with content that reflects well-founded and generous research. The Collection is an unprecedented resource for promoting past and present screendance practices. Spearheaded by the Regards Hybrides Collection team, a leading figure in the development of screendance internationally since 2012, the Collection puts forward an ethical approach to the distribution of screendance in the digital age, which is obviously innovative, but also feminist and decolonial.
